The stutter is most visible when moving objects or changing colors on the screen. The Vsync feature is turned on and off at the beginning of each frame by the operating system or application.
It can also be manually turned on or off through a program like DisplayFusion. The Vsync setting is not available for X11 applications on Windows. To turn on Vsync in an X11 application, you must use the Xvnc server that comes with X11.
Xvnc is a free, open-source software implementation of the VNC protocol that allows clients to connect to an X server running on one computer and view and control that X server on another.
The “client” computer can be almost anything with an X11 display driver, including a PC, a Mac, a game console, or any other type of Unix or Linux computer.
On my Windows machine, I have Xming installed and running on my network with an Xvnc client on my main computer. When I run Xvnc from my main computer, it connects to the X server running on my network computer (the “server”) and then starts an X11 session on my local machine.
This means I can run any Windows application from my main computer and control it from my local computer using my keyboard and mouse. To use this setup, you will need the following:
- Windows XP or later Xming Xvnc Download and install Xming. It’s easy-to-use and free.

- In the “Property Manager”, you should see an option to “Add” a new remote computer.
- Name the remote computer “XvncServer” and then click the “OK” button.
- When you are done, you should have two entries in your “Terminal Services Client” list: “XvncServer” and your normal Windows computer.
- Next, download and install Xvnc. You can find it at www.x.org/archive/X11R 2.8/doc/zinc- tar.gz. Unzip the file and then read the README file inside the unzipped folder for instructions on how to compile and install the software.
- Once installed, start up Xvnc by clicking on the “Start” button and then clicking on “Xvnc”.
- The first time you do this, you will be prompted to allow Xvnc to make some configuration changes to your X server. Just click the “Allow” button and then Xvnc will launch a new X11 session on your local machine.

There is not much difference in playing a game with the VSync off or on. But, there will be no flickering on the screen which will make the game more comfortable for a user.
The best thing to do is to turn it off as long as you are not using a gaming laptop because then you won’t need VSync at all. VSync is very helpful in the case of laptops and other devices with low-resolution monitors.
