- In addition to all the requirements and limitations of Windows 11, Microsoft has announced that another popular application will not be included in the new OS.
- It seems that the Internet Explorer browser will be disabled for this operating system.
- Users who do need it can use a feature called IE Mode, accessible through the Microsoft Edge browser.
- This article describes the exact steps you need to take to access this feature, regardless of your usage.
A few days ago, Microsoft announced that the very popular Internet Explorer would be disabled in the new Windows 11.
Some users thought that Internet Explorer might still be present in Windows 11 until the developers decided to remove it, but apparently this application will never end up in the registry of the new OS.
Even if the Internet Explorer for Windows 11 update never appears, there are ways around this problem.

More Internet Explorer for Windows 11
While few expected Internet Explorer to be in Windows 11, some were hoping for at least 32-bit Internet Explorer for Windows 11, but the new operating system will only run 64-bit software.
However, Microsoft has warned that next year’s Windows 10 Long Term Service Channel (LTSC) will include Internet Explorer, even though the consumer phase-out is scheduled for the 15th. June 2022 is planned.
As a result, Windows 11 will now remove this browser completely, and users who continue to use shortcuts like iexplore will be redirected to Microsoft Edge instead.
This is no surprise, as Microsoft is known for always looking ahead, even if it sometimes holds on to some features and applications from the past.
And judging by the small number of users who still have to use Internet Explorer for one reason or another, this won’t be considered a huge loss for the new operating system.
How do I enable Internet Explorer in Windows 11?
- Open your browser and go to: edge://flags/#edge-internet-explorer-integration
- Then a line appears at the top that says Enable IE integration.
- Click on the box next to this line and select IE mode from the drop-down menu.
- Create a shortcut for Edge on your desktop.
- Right click on the icon, select Properties and add the following text to the end of the text displayed in the target field: -ie-mode-test
- Click Apply and then OK.
- In Edge’s settings menu (the … button), select More Tools, then select Open Websites in Internet Explorer Mode. Once selected, this page will open in IE mode every time.
According to the list of deprecated applications in Windows 11, Internet Explorer will be completely disabled. Microsoft Edge is the recommended replacement, and it includes IE mode, which can be useful in some scenarios.
As you recall, Microsoft had announced in May that Internet Explorer would be released on the 15th. In June 2022, support for some versions of Windows 10 would end.
Windows users who still need Internet Explorer for older web applications have the option of using Microsoft Edge’s IE mode, which opens the website in the old rendering engine so that it works properly.
Although it is not possible to reinstall Internet Explorer on Windows 11, you can still take advantage of this feature by following the steps above. Users will know they are in IE mode because a small Internet Explorer icon will appear in the address bar.
It will be interesting to see exactly what happens to this interesting feature if Microsoft decides to do away with Internet Explorer altogether. Tell us what you think in the comments below.
